Interesting insights as always. Sounds like the new Godzilla film should be on my schedule. I'm at the point where I just wait for somebody I trust to say "there is a film out there that is actually good" before I even think about it.

I initially somewhat interested with the early episodes until the elite ninja appeared in mecha suits. There's nothing wrong with mixing up several concepts together or with the mecha design. They're unfortunately become my excuse to stop watching. I'm just rather burned out with a lot things especially when it comes to movies and, sadly, games. I said earlier that I was "somewhat" interested because it's just another super secret "the-best-of-the-best" agent who went out on a revenge quest against his former master. The energetic combat kept me interested but then the power suits appeared. Our protagonist is an elite ninja so why is he on a new training arc to use a stolen suit halfway through the series? I noticed movie burnout while watching John Wick 3. I love the first 2 movies but the third felt far too familiar. When the same music from the second movie is used again in the hotel lobby shootout in the third...my interest snapped. Speaking of music I can't enjoy modern Japanese movies, the WW2 ones in particular, because they seem to use that same one soundtrack that I first heard in Eternal Zero. And I can't enjoy modern kaiju movies because they are just vehicles for the directors/writers to take jabs at their own government. Shin Godzilla, Shin Ultraman, Gamera and Godzilla Minus One all showed the Japanese government as incompetent at best and conniving at worse. This obsession made potential sequels to be rather weird: either we'll be seeing the same incompetent government for the next 5 sequels if kaiju attacks remain a Japan-exclusive phenomena or the Japanese government being the stupidest one among the world governments as the fight against kaijus becomes an international effort.

I have heard "ok boomer", actually a cusp boomer that's married to a cusp Gen Xer. Our Millennium kids love us. Our parents, bought homes on single income in the early 70s 25K to 28K. We got zip from parents & we bought our house in the mid 90s for 120K with us both working. Should we be mad that our parent's got a deal too? Prices go up. Our rate on our house in 1996 was 7% & we scraped by with a 2nd job for me. Our down payment came by way of savings, 6 yrs after we married. Saving for a rainy day isn't something that the younger generation gets, as a whole.

I don't like that the label "slog" caught on regarding RJ's series. It's very disrespectful. Lots of us had to wait for each book to come out and when the next one came, we were grateful. It can be argued that so called fans made the label but I would argue that only first-time elitist readers and self-appointed critics of literature coined it to diminish the impact of the series or status because they didn't read it first in their little circle of readers. Also, "slog" implies there is some kind of speed factor in your reading habits that a book is supposed to account for in your tastes. How conceited. If you think something is a "slog" to read through, then how silly are you to be doing it? Read something else. When, I got 85% through 'The Name of the Wind' and stopped reading it, I didn't go to some message board of fans and talk about how much I hated the book. I just read something different. Move on.

It's funny that you mention Rowling being a lefty, as much as I knew that, I always thought that Harry Potter was a solidly right-coded series. Aside from an antichrist-like figure, Harry Potter's main antagonists are a bumbling, incompetent bureaucracy obsessed with disarming the people propped up by a hack practicing shameless yellow journalism who eventually get captured by the devil-worshippers. They are ultimately defeated by a citizen militia led by a messiah. In the post-war period, rather than a radical, revolutionary overturning of the social order, it seems to be mostly preserved and instead guarded by men of virtue. I think one of the reasons Rowling felt the need to fiddle after the books were done, talking about Dumbledore's sexuality or teasing race-swapping Hermione, was because many people, including Rowling herself, detected, without being able to verbalize, just how right-coded the whole thing was.

Asian/Filipino boomers are insufferable. I remember being a kid in the 90s and hearing them talk all the time about getting to play outside and bathe in rivers when they were younger. Not my parents-they had only swum in rivers when they’re on vacation, and we lived in a military base, so I did get to play outside in a safe environment. But growing up, I also heard a lot of technophobia from boomers. “Oh, you kids watch TV all the time instead of reading!” And it evolved into “You’re always plugged into your iPods!” and “You’re depressed/You have a headache because of your cellphone!” A few years ago, I joined a Facebook group called Titos and Titas of Manila, which is one big nostalgia party. But I left after a few months because it quickly became flooded with boomers saying things like, “Our childhood was better because we got to play in the forest and bathe in rivers!” Yes, again with the river thing. Millennials couldn’t have bathed in rivers because their soap and grime and other chemicals polluted them!!! Young people couldn’t play outside anymore because of the rise in crime rate, and most criminals were boomers as well! It’s infuriating!

I'd disagree about the definition of Christian Nationalism. The left definitely does use it as a catch-all term for traditional/fundamental Christians which they don't like and want to label as bad. But, as someone who grew up around the Independent Fundamentalist Baptists of the Bible belt (who have plenty of good qualities, I don't want to harp on them), I can attest there definitely tends to be a particular attitude among them intersecting Christianity with American nationalism. It's a belief that America is God's chosen nation, His Christian beacon to the world, and some even go so far as to believe America is the "New Israel". Now this definitely isn't all Independent Fundamentalist Baptists, but it's more common in that sphere than other circles I've noticed. So Christian Nationalism in my experience is Christians who have an unhealthy emphasis of their home country as important to the world (leading to idolization and sometimes even worship of that country)

On the subject of anime and interesting ideas, I was wondering if you had seen Frieren and what you thought of it? I don't know if I would agree that conservatives haven't conserved anything. If that was the case the U.S. would already be Venezuela, or some failed communist dystopia. Broadly speaking we still have a market economy, property rights, gun rights, religious freedom, and free speech. If not for conservatives the left would have already done away with all of those things completely.

  • @sempcd

The coloring and compositing issue is an interesting one, because many really murky and dark looking anime were found among early-mid 00s digipaint shows, stuff like Texhnolyze and Witch Hunter Robin. Robin's backgrounds were generally CGI and kind of resembled old survival horror pre renders, and yet managed to blend with the 2D animation well. So it's very much a choice to make everything super bright and saturated when using digipaint even when the material clashes with it, and we have examples of successful 2d/3d coherence from two decades ago at this point. Though mixing CGI camera motion with 2d characters animation adds extra difficulty to it because its two different kinds of motion at once. In the 80s the animators would just not use background art and animate simplified versions of the backgrounds with the characters to simulate camera motion instead, some shows still do these days, but its not as common.

For those struggling to understand Postmodernity in storytelling, I just read this description of an author’s novels: «He is the author of three previous novels: Apples, published when he was 22; Ten Storey Love Song, told in the form of a single 300-page paragraph; and Kimberly’s Capital Punishment (2012), which has six alternative endings. His new novel, Man-Eating Typewriter, a book within a book, is written in Polari and presents an anarchist’s memoir with commentary by an editor at a pulp press in 1970s Soho.» Polari is a weird British slang spoken by circus people that no one has ever heard of.

Exactly right in that current GOP is the Dems of 25 years ago. If Bill Clinton was a current Republican and ran his same exact presidential term over the next 8 years he would be the most successful GOP President since Reagan, and in some ways even more successful. In the 90's he made the federal government smaller and cut back federal spending which partially led to him running budget surpluses for a couple years of his term. Everything the GOP claims to be for.

Funnily enough, the anime adaptation of Tanya the Evil does a better job of with the conflict between the atheist and God than the original light novel. The LN series loses its luster after the first several volumes as the writer began to sidestep his own very interesting premise. The S1 anime actually added scenes which weren’t in the books that heightened the conflict. One of those rare cases of an adaptation doing good editorial work.

Comicsgate became the "right wing" version of SJW corpo comics. Absolutely despicable. Little cliques of weirdos controlling their section of the culture. But there's some really talented people who happen to be Comicsgate-adjacent like Mike Baron, Graham Nolan, Andy Smith and Art Thibert. I wish those guys would divest themselves of Comicsgate and just be on their own. You don't want to be beholden to a small group of Karens who determine whether you succeed or fail.

Want a good ninja story set in contemporary Japan? Try Under Ninja. The comedy is great, with a mix of dark and dry humour that's hard to find in Japanese media. Fights, plot and characters are also solid. There's one big problem though: the anime studio spent all the production money on booze and did the animation dirty. Still fun to watch, but they butchered the cathartic fights. Still, the manga is worth reading.

It seems the consensus is that episode 1 was the best episode. Once it got to around episode 5, I began to stop caring. The introduction of the Kamui, the mech suits, is when I totally checked out. I didn't find the relationship/backstory to Higan and his wife to be very compelling. If anything, I found that the cop was arguably the most interesting character. The villains were too plain and generic. Didn't feel anything when the show ended, but I thought the fight choreography was solid. Can't give it anything higher than a 5 though.
